Here Julius, the centurion who had listenedto the apostle'saddressbeforeAgrippa, and had thusbeenfavorablydisposedtowardhim, "courteouslyentreatedPaul," and beinginformed that therewere Christiansin the place,he " gave him libertytogo untohisfriendstorefreshhimself." The favorwas highlyappreciatedby the apostle,who was in feeblehealth, and but scantilyprovidedwithcomfortsforthelongjourney. His briefstayin Sidonwas likean oasisin his barrenand drearypath,and proved a comfort and encouragementto him during the anxious, storm-tossedweeks upon thesea. Upon leavingSidon,theshipencounteredcontrarywinds; and being driven from a direct course, itsprogresswas very slow. At Myra , intheprovinceof Lycia,the centurionfound a largeAlexandrianship, bound forthe coastof Italy,and tothishe immediatelytransferredhis prisoners. But the winds were stillcontrary, and theship'sprogressslow and difficult. Says Luke, "When we had sailedslowlymany days, and scarcewere come overagainstCnidus,the wind not sufferingus, we sailedunder Crete, over againstSalmone; and, hardly passingit, came unto a placewhich iscalledthe Fair Havens ." At Fair Havens they were compelledto remain forsome time,waitingforfavoringwinds. During thistime the Jewish seasonof navigation ended . Gentiles considered it safe to travel untila laterdate;but therewas no hope of completingthevoyage. The onlyquestionnow to be decided was , whether to stay where they were
