258 LIFE OF PAUL . of Satan unto God , that they might receive forgivenessof sins, and an inheritanceamong them that are sanctified? In Damascus ,in Jerusalem, and throughoutall Judea, and to the Gentiles, he had preached repentancetoward God , faithin Christ, and a lifeconsistenttherewith . This, and thisonly, was what ledthe Jews to seizehim inthetemple, and seek to put him to death; but the Lord had deliveredhim from this and everyotherdanger. The testimonywhich he bore concerningJesusof Nazarethwas no blasphemy,no heresy,no apostasy, but a truth in perfectharmony with allthe teachingsof Moses and theprophets. The apostlewas dwelling upon his favorite theme, inthatsolemn, earnest, impassionedmanner which had been so powerful an agent in his mission. In theall-absorbinginterestofhissubject, he lostsightof kingsand governorsand chiefcaptains,of wealth, rank, and titles. He was hearingthetestimonywhich was theobject ofhislife, and he couldspeakwiththeassurance of long familiarityand thefireof intenseconviction. None who heard him could doubt his sincerity. But in thefulltideof hiseloquence hewas suddenlystoppedshort. The factsrelated were new toFestus, astonearlyallpresent. The whole audiencehad listenedspell-bound toPaul's accountof wonderfulexperiencesand visions,of revelationsand ancientprophecies, and ofa Jewish prophetwho had beenrejectedand crucified, yet who had risenfrom the dead and ascended to Heaven ; and who only couldforgivesinsand lightenthedarknessof Jews and Gentiles. The last remark was too much for Festus to credit.
