But Felix, who had never beforelistened tothetruth,was deeplyagitatedas theSpiritof God sent convictionto hissoul. Conscience,now aroused, made her voice heard . He felt that Paul's words were true. Memory went back overthe guiltypast. With terribledistinctness came up beforehim thesecretsof his earlylife of lust and bloodshed,and the black record of his lateryears,-licentious,cruel, rapacious,unjust,steepedwith the bloodof privatemurdersand publicmassacres. Never beforehad the truth been thus brought home to his heart. Never before had his soul been thus filledwith terror. The thoughtthat allthe secretsof his careerof crime were open before the eye of God ,and that he must be judged accordingto his deeds, caused him to tremblewith guilty dread .
