He declaredthat he had caused no disturbance in any part of Jerusalem,nor had he profanedthe sanctuary: "They neitherfound me in thetempledisputing with any man , neitherraisingup the people, neitherinthesynagogues,norinthecity; neither can theyprove the thingswhereoftheynow accuse me . While confessingthat "afterthe way which theycallheresy" he had worshipedthe God of his fathers,he assertedthat he had never swerved from hisbeliefin the law and theprophets,and that in conformitywith the Scriptureshe held the faith of the resurrectionof the dead ; and he furtherdeclaredthatitwas the rulingpurposeofhislifeto "have alwaysa consciencevoid of offensetoward God and toward man ." In a candid,straightforwardmanner he then statedthe objectof hisvisitto Jerusalem,and the circumstances of his arrest and trial: " Now aftermany yearsI came to bring alms tomy nation,and offerings. Whereupon certainJews from Asia found me purifiedin the temple, neither with multitude nor with tumult . Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, iftheyhad aught againstme . Or elseletthese sameheresay,iftheyhavefoundanyevildoing inme ,whileI stoodbeforethecouncil,exceptit be forthisonevoice,thatI criedstandingamong them, Touching the resurrectionof the dead,I am calledin questionby you thisday."
