Yet theSatanicdevicesof theconjurerand the betrayersucceeded, and Felix accomplishedhis purpose . The Jews presentat Paul'sexamination shared inthegeneralfeelingtoward Felix; yetso great was theirdesiretogainhisfavorin orderto securethecondemnationofPaul,thattheyassented to the flatteringwords of Tertullus. These men in holyoffice,robedin the sacerdotalgarments, were very exact in the observance of customs and ceremonies,veryscrupuloustoavoidoutward pollution,whilethesoul-templewas defiledwith allmanner of iniquity. The outward contact withanythingdeemeduncleanwas a greatoffense intheireyes,whilethemurder of Paul was considereda justifiableact. What an illustrationof the blindnessthat can come upon the human mind ! Here were the representativesof those who claimedtobe God'scovenantpeople. Like thebarren fig-tree,they were clothedwith pretentiousleaves,but destituteof the fruitsof holiness; "having a form of godliness,but denying thepower thereof." Filledwith malicetoward a pureand good man ,seekingby everymeans to takehislife,and extollinga vindictiveprofligate! There are many to-day who estimatecharacterinthesame manner. Promptedby theadversary ofallrighteousness,theycallevilgood,and truth falsehood. It isas the prophethasdescribed,- "Truth isfallenin the street,and equitycannot enter."
