In theirrage againstPaul,the Jews had added another crime to the dark catalogue which marked thehistoryofthatpeople. They had stillfurtherhardenedtheirheartsagainstthe truth, and had rendered theirdoom more certain. There are but few who perceivethefullimport of the words of Christ, when in the synagogue at Nazareth he announced himself as the Anointed One . He declaredhismission to comfort, bless, and save the sorrowing and the sinful, and then, secingthat pride and unbeliefcontrolledthe hearts of his hearers, he reminded them how God had in time past turned away from his chosenpeople, becauseof theirunbeliefand rebellion, and had manifested himself to those in a heathenland who had not rejectedthe light from Heaven . The widow of Sarepta and Naaman the Syrianhad livedup toallthelight they had. Hence they were accountedmore righteousthan God's chosen people who had backsliddenfrom him, and sacrificedprinciple toconvenienceand worldlyhonor. Itisimpossiblefor the worldlyand pleasurelovingto rightlyvaluethemessagesofwarning and reproof which God sends to correct the errorsof hispeople.
