Now he was intheirpower, and theydeterminedto make him sufferforhis boldness . With the fury of demons they rushedupon him,crying, "Men of Israel,help! Thisisthe man that teachethallmen everywhereagainst thepeople,and the law, and thisplace." And asthepeopleingreatexcitementflockedto the scene. another accusation was added to excite theirpassionstothehighestpitch,- "and further、 brought Greeks alsointothe temple, and hath pollutedthisholyplace." By the Jewishlaw,itwas a crimepunishable with deathforan uncircumcisedpersonto enter the inner courts of the sacred edifice. As Paul had beenseenin thecityincompany withTrophimus, an Ephesian, itwas conjecturedthat he had broughthim intothe temple. This he had notdone,and beinghimselfa Jew ,hisactinenteringthe templewas no violationof the law. But thoughthechargewas whollyfalse,itserved tostirup thepopularprejudice. As thecrywas takenup and borne through the templecourts, the vast throngs gathered there were thrown into the wildestexcitement. The news quickly spreadthroughJerusalem, "and allthecitywas moved,and thepeopleran together." That an apostatefrom Israelshouldpresumetoprofanethe templeat the verytimewhen thousandshad come from allpartsof the world toworshipthere,excitedthe fiercestpassionsof themob .
