And now occurred a seriesof events,which , though seeming to bring only defeatand loss to the causeof Christ, were to resultin itstriumph ,givingtotheworldone of thenoblestexamples of Christianfaith,and winning from the ranksof itsopposerstheirmost activeand successfulchampion. Most of the earlybelievers were cutofffrom familyand friendsby thezealousbigotryof the Jews. Many of theconverts had been thrown out of business and exiled from theirhomes,becausetheyhad espousedthecause of Christ. It was necessaryto providethislarge number , congregated at Jerusalem, with homes and sustenance. Those having money and possessionscheerfullysacrificedthem tomeet theexistingemergency. Theirmeans werelaidat the feet of the apostles, who made distributionto every man accordingas he had need. Among thebelieverswere not onlythosewho were Jews by birthand spoketheHebrew tongue, but alsoresidentsofothercountries,who usedthe Greek language. Betweenthesetwo classesthere had longexisteddistrust,and even antagonism; and though theirhearts were now softened and unitedby Christianlove,yettheoldjealousieswere easilyrekindled.
