194 LIFE OF PAUL . They were constantlyextollingtheseapostles, and endeavoringtoprove them superiortoPaul inpositionandauthority. ButPaulshowedthat hisenemiescouldnot justifytheircourseby a pretendedregardfor theseapostles. While he honored them as faithfulministersof Christ, he showed thattheyhad not attemptedto instruct him,neitherhad theycommissionedhim topreach thegospel. They were convincedthatGod had calledhim topresentthetruthtotheGentiles,as he had designatedPeter to go especiallyto the Jews. Hence they acknowledged beforethe councilPaul's divine commission, and received him as a fellow-laborerof equal positionwith themselves . Itwas notto exaltself,but to magnifythe graceofGod,thatPaulthuspresentedtothosewho weredenyinghisapostleship,proofthathe was "not a whit behindtheverychiefestapostles." Those who soughtto belittlehiscalling and hiswork werefightingagainstChrist,whose graceand power were manifestedthroughPaul. Hence theapostlefeltthathe was forced,by the oppositionof hisenemies,and evenby thecourse of his brethren , to take a decided stand to maintainhispositionand authority. CHAPTER XVIII . PAUL'S LAST JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM . PAUL greatlydesiredtoreachJerusalembefore thepassover,as he would thus have an opportúnitytomeet the peoplewho came from allparts of the world to attend the feast.
