He continues: " Now I rejoice,notthatye were made sorry,but thatye sorrowedtorepentance; forye were made sorryaftera godly manner, thatye might receivedamage by usinnothing. For godlysorrowworkethrepentancetosalvationnot tobe repentedof." That repentancewhich isproducedby theinfluenceofdivinegraceupon the heart, willlead to the confessionand forsaking of sin. Such were the fruits which the apostledeclareshad been manifestedby the Corinthian church : " What carefulness it wrought inyou,yea,what clearingofyourselves, yea,what indignation,yea,what fear,yea,what vehement desire,yea,what zeal." Stilltherewas a small minorityof theCorinthianswho stubbornlyresistedalleffortsof the apostlefor the purificationof the church; but their course was such that none could be deceived in them. They displayeda most bitterspirit, and were bold in denunciationof Paul, accusing him ofmercenarymotives,and craftinpreaching thegospeland dealingwiththechurches. They chargedhim with receivingpersonaladvantage from the means contributedby the brethren for variousbenevolentpurposes. On theotherhand, some challengedhisclaimstoapostleship,because he did not demand supportfrom the churcheswhich he had raisedup . Thus the accusations of hisopposerswere conflicting, and withouta shadow of foundation . Justsuchunreasonablepersonsare to be met inour times,men who setthemselvesagainstthe progressof thework of God,whileprofessingto believethetruth.
