The disciples, endowed with a power and energyhithertounknown ,preached Christtothevastmultitudethatfrom allparts of theworld assembledat thefeast. Signsand wonders confirmedtheirwords; and in thevery strongholdofJudaism,thousandsopenlydeclared theirfaith in Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified malefactor,asthepromisedMessiah. And but a short time after the events of Pentecost, a mighty miracle, wrought by the apostles, filledall Jerusalem with excitement. A cripplewho had been lame from hisbirthwas healedby Peterand John inthe presenceof the people,withintheveryprecinctsof the temple. This astonishingcurewas performedinthename of Jesus,theapostlesdeclaringthathe had ascendedtotheheavens,and thenceimpartedpower tohisfollowers; and theyfearlesslychargedupon theJews thecrimeof hisrejectionand murder. Great numbers of the people receivedthe doctrinespreachedby the apostles. Many of the most determinedopponentscould but believe, though they refusedto acknowledge,thatJesus had risenfrom the dead. They did not, however, repentof theirterriblecrime in putting him to death. When the power from Heaven cameupon theapostlesinsoremarkablea manner,fearheldthepriestsand eldersfrom violence; but theirbitternessand malicewere unchanged. Five thousandhad alreadyopenlydeclaredtheir faithin Christ; and both Phariseesand Sadducees decidedamong themselvesthat if those new teacherswere sufferedtogo on unchecked,their
