PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS . 171 Paul rebukesthe Corinthiansformaking the houseofGod a placeoffeastingand revelry,like a company of idolaters: "What ! have ye not housestoeatand todrink in? or despiseye the church of God ,and shame them thathave not?" The publicreligiousfeastsof the Greeks had been conductedin thisway ,and it was by followingthe counselsof falseteachersthat the Christianshad beenledto imitatetheirexample. Theseteachershad begun by assuringthem that itwas not wrong to attend idolatrousfeasts,and had finallyintroducedsimilarpracticesintothe Christian church . Paul proceededtogivetheorderand objectof theLord'ssupper,and thenwarned hisbrethren againstpervertingthissacredordinance: "As oftenas ye eat thisbread, and drink thiscup,ye do show the Lord's death tillhe come . Wherefore,whosoever shalleat this bread, and drink thiscup of the Lord,unworthily,shallbe guilty ofthebody and bloodoftheLord. He thateatethand drinkethunworthily,eatethand drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord'sbody ." The apostlethus sought, in the most decided and impressivemanner,to correctthe falseand dangerousideasand practiceswhich were prevailingin the Corinthianchurch. He spoke plainly,yetinlovefortheirsouls. In hiswarningsand reproofs, lightfrom thethroneof God was shiningupon them,to revealthehiddensins thatwere defilingtheirlivesand characters. Yet how would it be received ? While writingto the Corinthians, Paul had firmlycontrolledhisfeelings;butwhen theletterhad beendispatched,a reactioncame. He feared
