PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS . 161 Beginning with Moses and the prophets,he led them graduallyfrom pointto point,comparing scripturewithscripture,tracingdown thefulfillment of prophecy, showing the evidencethat Messiah was to have come , and the manner of his coming. He then clearlypresentedbefore them theobjectof his coming,and what he was tohave done upon earth,and how he was tohave been received . When he had given many discoursesupon thesesubjects, he testifiedthat the Messiah had indeedcome, and thenpreachedthesimple gospelof Jesus Christ. This was the craftwhich Paulmentions,sayingthathe caughtthem with guile. He thustriedtoallayprejudice,andwin soulsto the truth. He refrainedfrom urging upon the Jews the fact that the ceremoniallaws were no longerof any force. He cautionedTimothyto remove any occasionfor them to reject his labors. He complied with theirrulesand ordinances as far as was consistent with his mission to the Gentiles . He would not mislead the Jews nor practicedeceptionupon them ; but he waived hispersonalfeelings,for the truth'ssake. With the Gentiles his manner of labor was different. He plainlyinformedthem that the sacrificialofferingsand ceremoniesof the Jews were no longerto be observed, and preachedto them Christ and him crucified. The apostlein hislaborsencountereda class who claimed that the moral law had been made void,with thepreceptsoftheceremonialsystem. He vindicated the law of ten commandments , and helditup beforethepeopleas a ruleof life. He showed that all men are under the most solemn obligationto obey thatlaw, whichChrist 11
