PAUL AT EPHESUS . 139 have perished. The dead do notholdcommunion with theliving. But trueto hisearlycunning, when in the form of a serpenthe deceivedthe mother of ourrace,Satan employsthisdeviceto gaincontrolof theminds of men . The heathenoracleshave theircounterpartin thespiritualisticmediums, the clairvoyants, and fortune-tellersofto-day. The mysticvoicesthat spoke at Endor and Ephesus, are stillby their lying words misleadingthe childrenof men . The mysteriesof heathenworshipare replaced by the secretassociationsand seances, the obscuritiesand wonders, of the sorcerersof our time. Theirdisclosuresare eagerlyreceivedby thousandswho refuseto acceptlightfrom God's word or from his Spirit. While they speak with scorn of the magicians of old, the great deceiverlaughsin triumph as theyyieldto his arts in a different form . His agentsstillclaim to curedisease. They professto employ electricity, magnetism,or the so-called" sympatheticremedies;" but in truth the magnetic power of which they boast is directlyattributableto the sorceryof Satan. By thismeans he castshisspelloverthe bodies and souls of men . The sick, the bereaved, the curious, are communicatingwith evilspirits. All who venture here are on dangerous ground. The word of truthdeclareshow God regardsthem. In ancient timeshe pronouncedjudgments upon one who sent for counsel to a heathen oracle: " Is itnot because there is not a God in Israel that thou sendestto inquireof Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron ? therefore thou shalt not come down from thatbed on which thou artgone up,but shalt surelydie."
