EPISTLES TO THE THESSALONIANS . 111 PaulwrotetothechurchatThessalonica,greetingthem,and invokingintheirbehalftheblessing of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. He reminded them ofhisown laborsamong them,and theiracceptanceoftheword,turningawayfromidols"to servethelivingand trueGod ,and to waitforhis Son fromHeaven,whom he raisedfrom the dead, even Jesus,which deliveredus from the wrath to come ." He further referredto his work and that of his fellow-laborersamong them,remindingthem ofthe boldnesswithwhichtheyhad preachedthe gospel untothem,in the midstof opposition,abuse,and discouragement," notaspleasingmen,butGod,which triethour hearts." Paul then endeavored to inform his Thessalonian brethrenconcerningthe truestateof the dead. He speaksof them as asleep,---in a stateof unconsciousness: "I wouldnot have you tobe ignorant,brethren,concerningthem which are asleep, thatye sorrow not,even as otherswhich have no hope. For if we believethatJesusdied and rose again,evensothem alsowhichsleepin Jesuswill God bring with him . For the Lord himself shalldescendfrom Heaven with a shout,withthe voiceofthearchangel,and withthetrumpofGod ; and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we whicharealiveand remainshallbe caughtup togetherwiththem in theclouds,to meet the Lord inthe air; and so shallwe everbe with the Lord . Wherefore comfort one another with these words ."
