Paul, under the inspirationof hissubject,soaredabove thecomprehensionof the idolatrousassembly,and soughtto draw theirminds beyond thelimitsof theirfalsereligiontocorrectviewsof thetrueDeity,whom theyhad styledthe" Unknown God ." This Being,whom he now declaredunto them, was independentof man , needing nothingfrom human handstoadd tohispower and glory. The peoplewere carriedaway with admiration of Paul'seloquence. The Epicureansbegan to breathemorefreely,believingthathewasstrengtheningtheirposition,thateverythinghad itsorigin in blindchance; and thatcertainrulingprinciples controlledthe universe. But his next sentencebrought a cloudto theirbrows. He asserted the creativepower of God , and the existenceof hisoverrulingprovidence. He declareduntothem the trueGod ,who isthe livingcenterof government . ThisdivineRulerħad,inthedarkagesofthe world, passedlightlyoverheathenidolatry; but now he had sentthem the lightof truth,through hisSon ; and he exacted from allmen repentance unto salvation; notonlyfromthe poor and humble, but from the proud philosopher, and the princesof the earth. " Because He hath appointeda day, in the which he willjudge the worldinrighteousnessby thatMan whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath givenassuranceunto allmen ,in thathe hath raisedhim from the dead."
