Old landmarks exhibit · foundation and authority
“No line of truth that has made the Seventh-day Adventist people what they are, is to be weakened. We have the old landmarks of truth, experience, and duty, and we are to stand firmly in defense of our principles, in full view of the world.”
Ellen G. White, Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 17; cited in Counsels to Writers and Editors, p. 52.3.
The old landmarks are the living line of light that made the original Adventist people: the prophetic waymarks, the sanctuary, the commandments of God, the faith of Jesus, the Sabbath and sealing message, and the Three Angels’ Messages.
“The reason why the churches are weak and sickly and ready to die” was that the enemy sought “to shut Jesus from their view as the Comforter.”
Ellen G. White, The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, p. 696.1.
“Yet we hear that the voice of the Conference is the voice of God. Every time I have heard this, I have thought that it was almost blasphemy.”
Ellen G. White, Manuscript 37, 1901.
“That these men should stand in a sacred place, to be as the voice of God to the people ... that is past.”
Ellen G. White, General Conference Bulletin, April 3, 1901, p. 25.
